I was reading a Time Magazine article about a girl in 1st grade who is basically shy in public/school but is "normal" around people she likes (family). The article claimed that it was a "growing disorder" (forget the name) that many kids have.

It seems that almost every week you hear about this new disorder that sounds like something less-severe we used to "pass it off" as. I find it to be bullshit that these "Doctors" are claiming something like shyness (which the article claims most kids grow out of [the "disorder]) is a disorder and that they must pump more pills down their throats.

What do you guys think about relativly normal things (like shyness, though a bit more 'extreme') being labled as a disorder?

I agree that it could be considered a psychological disorder, but nothing that requires any sort of chemicals to fix. I've always been more reserved around people I don't know, but that's something I'd just consider to be normal...Surely it's not abnormal for kids to be reserved around people they don't know, considering they've been protected by their parents for the first so many years of their lives?

nah its not a disorder. I mean when you are around people you dont know ofcourse your going to be a little shy and given the fact shes in first grade makes it sound more reasonable. Shes lived with her family her whole life and is now starting to go to school and meet new people. She will come out of her shell as time goes on,

Doctors always seem to put labels on everything, in this case I find it real stupid.

I don't like to think of myself as mentally challenged, and I'm ridiculously reserved around people I don't know. Shyness cannot be considered a mental disorder at that level. Now, if you're totally anti-social, that's a different thing... but curbing your emotions around strangers is something that almost everyone does.

I agree.

If a doctor were put into a room of people who were nothing like him, and he was reserved, would he then label himself as having a disorder?

Okay. Then you hate what profession I'll become. lol.

But I don't think it's a disorder, only because that would mean that I'd act buddy buddy with everyone. Yes, I'll be buddies with someone who I don't know at all...and probably wants his/her space. I'll work on that.
